For the Love of Everything, Go Vote

Listen, I get it. Politics is stupid. Both sides suck and are only out for money and power, not caring what actually happens to the rest of us. If I had my way, I’d burn the whole system to the ground and go back to the days when we lived in a little village where each of us had our part to play and contributed to the whole, everyone living in harmony. But, that’s not reality and it’s naive to think it will ever be that way again. That’s (gasp!) communism. Or at least what it was before it turned into something much different. Yes, both sides suck, but I’m here to tell you that one side sucks just slightly less, and what absolute privilege must you have to think you can just sit this one out because you hate all of them.

I would not label myself the most political person you’ve ever met, and there’s a reason for that. I don’t consider basic human rights to be “political.” Unfortunately, the inhabitants of of our government over in Washington do not feel the same. I’m just going to lay it out: One side wants to strip women of their bodily autonomy and one does not. Even if there’s a Republican that doesn’t seem too radical and they promise that they’re not looking to change the existing abortion laws in your state (I’m looking at you, Sununu), do not believe them. We had two Supreme Court justices sit in their confirmation hearings and LIE TO OUR FACES about their intent to overturn Roe v. Wade. As in, they said they had no interest in it. Ha! One side is full of KKK members and one is not. One side are literal Nazis and one is not. One side tried to overthrow the government and one did not. I’m sorry, but not participating in this ridiculous process that we have to live with is the same as condoning the removal of rights from anyone who isn’t a straight, white male. I will pay as much money as I need to for gas to do my part to make sure this doesn’t happen. Not that that’s how it works. Actually, I don’t know. I don’t have a degree in Economics or International Relations (unlike all the people on the internet must have to be sick experts), but I do have one in Psychology. And I know cult behavior when I see it.

My twelve-year-old son sat with me on Thursday night to watch Grey’s Anatomy. He was just stalling going to bed, but it was such an important episode that I let him watch. For those of you who aren’t fans (first of all, what is wrong with you?), I’ll give you a quick recap: After the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Dr. Bailey and Dr. Montgomery head to a women’s clinic, run by Dr. Bailey’s college friend, to help out. They are charged with picking up a patient in another state who was diagnosed with a non-viable ectopic pregnancy. Her original doctor would not perform the lifesaving abortion, also known as healthcare, because the laws were still new and he couldn’t be sure he wouldn’t be arrested and/or lose his license, because the fetus still had a “heartbeat.” The doctors scoop her up and begin to transport her to a state where abortion is legal to perform the necessary procedure. One problem: the ectopic pregnancy ruptured while they were still en route and the woman lost so much blood that they were unable to save her. She had a husband and a four-year-old daughter at home. Yes, this is a drama, but to think stuff like this doesn’t happen in some states is living in a fantasy land. My son, his mouth open and with possibly a little water in his eyes, said, “that is the stupidest shit I’ve ever seen. I can’t believe they would let someone die like that.” I couldn’t even be mad at him for swearing. That WAS some stupid shit.

What is my point? One group is A-OK with this scenario and one is not. If you’re not political and you think both sides suck, you still need to participate in the process because this is the world we were handed, shitty as it is. I’m not even here to tell you that I don’t care who you vote for as long as you vote. Fuck that. I’m straight up telling you to vote for the side that isn’t full of actual Nazis. Because this is my site and I can. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. See you on Tuesday.
